The Very First: Terminator
Welcome to my blog for class, for this post I had read an article Titled "Top 6 Fears About Future Technology",it was about how robots would take over the world if left unchecked. In the article it had a very good analogy, that if you created a paper clip maker with no parameters it would use every resource at its disposal which could potentially be what we as humans need to survive and the machine would wipe us out. The analogy kind of brings to light, in a smoother way than the Terminator movie, that if you don't give a machine a guideline to follow or a "stop sign" then it would just do what it was told until it can't anymore.
Machines are built to follow orders that are given to them, so if we were to make a robot it would still have to follow orders given to it, there's also Asimov's 3 laws of robotics, Robots cannot harm humans, they cannot through inaction cause a human to come to harm and finally they can't follow any orders that conflict with the first law. Now there's nothing saying that if a scientist or engineer created a murder bot that it would follow those rules but for now I'd put my faith in those three simple rules.
Unfortunately robots are also feared for taking our jobs and lively hood, this you can see in everyday life, kiosks at fast food restaurants, ATM's, even on cell phones you can get a robot to do someones job. This is a much more obvious show of what technology can do to our society but its not because of the tech itself, instead it comes from the greed and hubris of humanity, who instead of making things for humanity to better itself our technology is wasted on fast food and making things easier when there's no need for it.
In all reality it's easier for humanity to stay away from AI and more on the just predefined code kind of robots side because then we wouldn't have any fear of them taking over.

I like your reference to Asimov's three laws of robotics. And you make a good point that while the robots have to follow those rules, humans certainly don't have to ensure that robots do. Are there any groups working to put such ethics/laws in place?
ReplyDeleteI researched into this topic for a short period and I didn't find any groups that do in fact ensure this, but there are robots rights groups.
DeleteI thought the three laws you brought up were interesting, and the Terminator reference was great. Do you think our society would be better if technology wasn't used to replace humans jobs?
